ESL ClassesWe offer two levels of ESL class. In both levels we concentrate on English vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing. We also practice our speaking and listening skills. The book we use for each class is determined by the English proficiency level of the students in each group. All units consist of a grammar skill, three reading selections and writing practice. The units are mostly themed around science and social studies topics, giving students the opportunity to learn vocabulary and content that is similar to other classes. This year we are also focusing on eight different academic vocabulary words during each unit. This year our lower proficiency group is using the blue book and the higher proficiency class is using the green book.

Reading & Writing for academic achievementThis year we are excited to be offering a new class for our more advanced proficiency students. This class is focusing on nonfiction reading and writing skills using grade-level, or close to grade-level texts, that deal primarily with science and social studies topics, though we will look at some classic literature texts as well. The goal is to help students improve their reading and writing skills so they can improve their performance on standardized tests, increase their grades in their general education classes and be better prepared for high school.
